Collaborative Project

I found the collaborative projects present at Mt. Vernon for science and art to be impressive. I would like to incorporate a similar mode of collaboration in my classroom.

I propose a collaborative project that combines art of the students with art of a senior center. I would like this project to be an examination of cultures, young and old, and how the two cultures intersect, differ and relate to one another. The medium used will be paint or collage. Students will create an artwork that exposes what they see as a portrait of the city in which they live. Senior citizens will, in turn, create a portrait of the city they have known. The pieces will be collected and exhibited together in the community's Art Center. The voices of both the seniors and the students describing their city or neighborhood will be played in the background of the exhibition. There will be photographs collected from both the seniors and students on display during the exhibition as well.
